Progress, Not Perfection

I’m totally Type-A. I’m not going to lie, sometimes I can’t get out of my own way because I am worried about something not being perfect. Here’s the thing…

There’s no such thing as perfection.

In fact, imperfection can actually be quite liberating! I’m just starting to realize that I don’t have to be perfect all.the.time. And that can eliminate a whole lot of stress. Whew!

It took me over 20 YEARS to figure out what I wanted to be when I “grew up”. Damn did I feel like I was moving at a snails pace sometimes.

I was miserable for years in corporate jobs. It wasn’t until I got laid off that I stepped out of my comfort zone and went back to cooking school at the age of 29. Hummm…that felt better, but not quite there…yet. Progress none the less.

When I finally had an “ah-ha” moment and enrolled in school to become a health coach, I was 38 years old. It took me nine years to figure it out but I got there. I was scared sh!tless of the future and the unknown but knew I had to do it anyway. Definite progress.

Becoming an entrepreneur was (and still is!) scary. But I realized that I have to step out of my comfort zone in order to follow my passion. And I love what I do – even if I don’t have all the answers. More progress.

I used to HATE public speaking. I still get nervous before a big workshop or event, but I have learned to embrace those nerves. Prepare, but don’t sweat the small stuff. I sometimes have to say over and over “You’ve got this!”. And you know what? It always works out. Progress.

There will be bumps in the road of life. You will have moments where where you feel completely in sync and other times when everything is chaotic. In the moments of chaos, remember that key is to move forward one step at a time. Progress is progress no matter how small.

The same goes for health goals. The first thing I ask my clients to do when we meet for a session is to answer a few key questions. I’d like to share a few of them with you. Take out a notebook and a pen. Close your eyes, take a few slow, deep breaths and take the time to sit with each one.

  1. How will it make a difference in your life (and the lives of the ones you love) if you make positive changes in your health? Figuring out WHY you really want to be healthier is the first step towards change.
  2. What is stopping or slowing you down from having what you want? What can you clear/rearrange/rethink in order to move forward?
  3. What things do you get the most joy of out of life? Are you doing ENOUGH of the things that bring you true JOY? Life is also about balance. When you have balance in your life, everything else falls into place.
  4. What will it look like when you achieve your goals? There is true power in affirmations and visualizations.

Asking yourself these questions doesn’t mean that you won’t have missteps along the way. You will and that’s OK. Getting clear on your goals WILL help you remember WHY you are doing this and keep you moving forward.
